Cantilever Rack Storage System

Cantilever Rack Storage System

A local home improvement retailer contacted SHECO to create a high capacity, easily accessible storage system for their lumber yard. Because of the excessive length and sometimes odd shapes of the materials, the length and strength of the supports was critical, especially when it came to supporting large sheets of plywood. And because the center lacked space inside their retail facility, the lumber yard needed to reside in an adjacent, outdoor lot.

The SHECO material handling experts recommended and installed a cantilever rack system from Modern Equipment Company. This system offered the feature necessary to support the heavy weight and varied sizes of the multiple types of lumber products as well as a flexible, modular design that could be modified as storage requirements changed. The open design of the rack system also offered the flexibility of picking single pieces by hand or moving multiple pieces by forklift onto and off of the racks. To shield the inventory from the elements, SHECO worked with the home center carpentry team to construct custom canopy systems over each rack system, providing protection for the product without hampering accessibility.

A chemical distribution center needed a more efficient storage and material handling system for its perishable products. Not only did they need a system that made the best use of their facility’s space, a First In First Out (FIFO) distribution system was essential for quality control and to prevent lost revenue caused by having to dispose of past prime materials that could no longer be sold.

The SHECO material handling and storage team designed the ideal solution using a combination of Husky pallet racks and Inter-Roll flow rails to create a highly efficient, first-in, first out storage system. This system utilized one aisle for loading and another for pallet retrieval. As new pallets were added to the rack, older pallets were pushed through the system to the unloading aisle on a system of gravity-fed, flow rails. As materials were needed, older pallets were removed from the retrieval side of the rack system. Special safety separators at the end of each storage lane isolated the pallet to be unloaded, removing any pressure that may be exerted on them by the additional pallets in the line.

This system provided automatic yet safe movement of materials through the pallet rack system that allowed materials to be accessed easily, in order with less labor and equipment. Employees were now able to load and unload product easily and safely and with no intermediate aisles needed to access materials, this rack design made the absolute most efficient use of the existing space while guaranteeing accurate stock rotation.
